We're on JoJo Beauty Duty!

Last week I provided some remedies for the winter blues, and this week I want to continue with a few beauty-related feel-good tips. Whenever you believe that you look good, you exude confidence on the outside that shows just how good you are feeling inside. We believe in self-love and self-respect at Dona Jo, and taking time to do your nails, apply makeup, and/or care for your hair are all girly things that we feel you should do for yourself if it makes you happy! I would like to take you through my “natural” makeup routine that I like to do before heading to the gym. Keep in mind that I like lifting weights, playing video games, and watching hockey—so I can be a bit of a tomboy too!

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, I like to lay out my outfits in advance. This week, my favorite ensemble was this one pictured here (guess what day of the week I wore it on??)  I felt fierce and feminine in this cross-tank, pink kangaroo bra, acai running calf-leggings and butterfly-print headband***. I love the blend of visual and tactile textures and the bright colors that pop against the black. Once I put this bra on, I was feeling girly instantly and ready to apply my makeup.

  • I start by washing my face with a gentle oil-free acne wash.
  • Then, I moisturize with my go-to face lotion: Jergens Natural Glow
    I like this lotion because it does help maintain a bit of color in my face throughout the winter, and it also contains SPF 20 to defend the sun that reflects off of the snow when I'm outside running.

  • Once my skin is clean and hydrated, I even it out.  
     I don't use much concealer, but I do like to apply this Olay eye regenerating cream under my eyes to eliminate any appearance of bags.  I sometimes also dab it over any blemishes that may pop up. 
  • I apply a cream foundation to completely even out my skin.
    I use these simple foam wedges and cut them in half to make them last longer! It's good to use a different side of the sponge each time the foundation is applied.  I rub the sponge into the foundation and then apply it onto my face from the inside out and up.  I always apply in the opposite direction of gravity! (This goes for lotion as well.)
  • I like to do a little bit of contouring to define my facial structure. 

    I have a highlight and a shadow that I apply with a brush on key areas of my face. I will highlight the bridge of my nose and the apples of my cheeks; and I shadow the sides of my nose and under my cheek bones.  These places are easy to find if you make a fish-face. It looks silly, but it works! I usually just blend out the highlight with my ring finger. The shadow is a little more obvious, so I take a narrow brush and sweep bronzer overtop of the shadowed area to blend it. I use this one pictured here fittingly titled, "Ticket to Brazil." :)
  • Next, it's time to define the features of my face. 

    Being a brunette, I have fairly dark eyebrows.  I use a combination of black and brown eyebrow pencils to fill in the thin areas.  I take the pencil and make short strokes mimicking the hairs. I blend the pencil marks with an eyebrow brush that has thick bristles.  This prevents my eyebrows from looking drawn-on. 
  • Once I have my bold brows, I define my eyes.

    I like to use a light brown pencil to outline each eye on the top and bottom.  It seems like a bit much when it is first applied, but I will smooth it with a neutral shimmering eye shadow.  The one I always use (as you can tell) is "Mink" by CoverGirl.  I apply it overtop of the eyeliner as well as on top of my eyelids and in the crease.  This shade really helps to emphasize my blue eyes.
  • Next, I curl my eyelashes. Some women are lucky and already have nice curly eyelashes and they can just apply mascara to them. I, on the other hand, have eyelashes that want to stick straight out. So if you are like me, you probably use an eyelash curler.  I have found that heating up my curler with my hair dryer helps to make my lashes curl better and stay curled longer.  Just hold the curler under the heat for a few seconds and test it on your hand to make sure it's not too hot. 

    Notice how my kangaroo bra doubles as a mascara holder! As you can see from the comparison of my eyes in the middle image here, curling my lashes really opens up my eyes! This is probably my favorite step in applying makeup.  After they are curled, I use a lengthening mascara to add some height to the top and bottom lashes.  If I want bolder lashes, I go over them with a layer of volume-enhancing mascara.
  • The last touch is a swipe of Burt's Bees on my lips...

    ...And I'm ready to conquer the workout!

Gorgeous! I also pick out my clothes in advance. I find that if I pick out the clothes that work best with what body part I’m working out that day, it motivates me to get into the gym. When I go to the gym with no make up, I always feel like the people are staring at me (in a bad way) but when I’m wearing my Dona Jo outfits and have a little make up on I feel like I can do anything! I’ve moved up in weights quickly over the past week too!

I really thoroughly enjoy your blog posts on here, they help keep me motivated and pushing towards a better me. My boyfriend and I just recently started crossfit together to get fit and healthy and I honestly lay my outfit out every night before and he makes fun of me for that. It’s cool to know that someone else does the exact Same thing as well! You are truly an inspiration and I look forward to more blog posts!

well, as a crossfit rookie i have learned that handstand push-ups are hell LOL especially when you are blinded by your locks of hair in yourface. As a college student most of the time i barely have time to look in the mirror so a fab headband to rock at the gym and right to class is every fit girls necessity
